Set in Neo Tokyo during Galaxy Century 0051, fifty years after first contact with aliens, humans have developed super light-speed travel and established a planetary commonwealth. Robby Yarge, a self-proclaimed freelance writer in his thirties, is on a streak of bad luck: he loses his job, his girlfriend leaves him, he nearly dies in a traffic accident, and he is pursued by debt collectors. One day, a bag snatcher steals Robby's belongings, but a young man named Hatchi Kita, an 18-year-old part-time worker, intervenes, catches the thief, and returns Robby's bag. Robby offers to repay Hatchi's kindness with a meal, and the two, realizing how different they are, part ways. However, Hatchi reappears in Robby's life as a debt collector working for the loan shark Yan. A cat-and-mouse chase ensues, with Yan's subordinates Aro and Gra in pursuit. Robby manages to evade Hatchi and escape to space, shaking off Yan's group. Thinking of fleeing to Isekandar, a distant and legendary planet in the Milky Way said to bring happiness, Robby believes he is alone in his spaceship—until he discovers Hatchi inside. The two decide to travel together across the galaxy in search of Isekandar.
