Roque Santeiro

In the impoverished town of Asa Branca, located in the Brazilian Northeast, Roque Santeiro is venerated as a saint. He was supposedly killed by a bandit 18 years ago while attempting to protect the local church. Following his disappearance, local leaders such as landowner Sinhozinho Malta and mayor Florindo used the situation to consolidate control over the town's poor population. They even created a fabricated widow, Porcina, who is said to have secretly married Roque before his death. What they did not anticipate is that Roque is actually alive and has returned, ostensibly to "save his people." Now, Malta, Florindo, Porcina, and others must suppress him and reveal the "truth" to the townspeople in a desperate bid to protect their own interests. Meanwhile, several mysterious elements surround Asa Branca, including a werewolf, a film crew attempting to make a movie about Roque's story, and a series of violent murders.
