Rules of Engagement

Jeff and Audrey, a married couple, react to their neighbor Jennifer's engagement to Adam, with Jeff offering unsolicited advice that leads him to question the relationship. Jennifer tries to help Adam's best friend, Russell, by setting him up with a potential long-term partner to curb his pattern of short-term relationships. At the same time, Jeff unintentionally sparks a conflict with Audrey over an old bicycle.

As Jeff's birthday approaches, the group works together to plan a party, but Audrey's overzealous planning begins to annoy Jeff. While Jeff remains secretive about the usual birthday deal, Adam's mention of it to Jennifer leads to an unexpected offer. Russell becomes fixated on uncovering the true nature of Jeff's birthday gift.

Russell spends time with an attractive new date, while Audrey challenges Jeff to get a phone number from a younger woman, giving him a night without his wedding ring to do it.

Jeff unintentionally upsets Audrey when he seems more interested in his basketball game than celebrating her promotion, so he tries to make amends by taking her to a Knicks game. Audrey's indecision about what to wear troubles Jeff, making him question her priorities. Meanwhile, Jennifer and Adam argue about finances after moving in together.

Russell runs into Constance, a woman from his past, and attempts to impress her by demonstrating his physical abilities.

Jeff struggles to confess to Audrey that he became physically aroused during a massage from Jennifer, and he must find a way to address the situation with her.

Audrey becomes uneasy as Jeff frequently reflects on the meaning behind each of his t-shirts, leading her to question whether his happiest moments occurred before they met.
