Five hundred years before *Saiyuki*, a heretic child with golden eyes is brought to Heaven and placed under the reluctant care of Konzen, a minor deity and nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen eventually names the child "Goku." Goku befriends two other minor gods, Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of the Western Army of Heaven, as well as a boy who appears to be his age, the War Prince Nataku. While Goku is happy in his new home, Heaven remains unkind to heretics.
