Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is an American television soap opera that premiered in the United States on NBC on July 30, 1984, and concluded on January 15, 1993. The series centers on the Capwell family, a wealthy family living in Santa Barbara, California. Other significant families in the show include the rival Lockridges, as well as the less affluent Andrade and Perkins families. The series was co-produced by NBC and Dobson Productions until February 1985, when New World Pictures became a third production partner. The resulting partnership, New World Television, also served as the show's distributor. Santa Barbara was broadcast in over 40 countries worldwide. The show gained considerable popularity, with fans even in the White House. In 1985, after character Augusta Lockridge was blinded in a tunnel collapse, President Ronald Reagan sent a letter to actress Louise Sorel expressing his and Nancy Reagan's prayers for her recovery. Santa Barbara received 24 Daytime Emmy Awards and was nominated for the same award 30 times. It also won 18 Soap Opera Digest Awards and several other honors. In 1993, NBC replaced Santa Barbara with the game shows Scrabble and Scattergories. Prior to its cancellation, New World Television attempted to find another broadcast or cable network to air the show but was unsuccessful.
