Segodon
Saigo Takamori, a central figure in the Meiji Restoration, was born into a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain, now part of Kagoshima Prefecture. His integrity and sincerity drew the attention of Satsuma's charismatic feudal lord, Shimazu Nariakira. Inspired by Nariakira’s belief that the well-being of the people would strengthen the nation, Saigo took on a secret mission for him and became a key figure in Satsuma's affairs. No known portrait of Saigo survives, and much of his life remains unknown. He was twice exiled and married three times. He played a crucial role in the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate through his bravery and decisive actions. Despite his success in the restoration, he ultimately died in conflict with the new Meiji government.
