Amakawa Haruto, a 20-year-old university student, dies in a bus accident, regretting not expressing his feelings to his childhood friend, Miharu, who vanished after their high school entrance ceremony. The story shifts to the slums of the Kingdom of Beltrum, where a boy named Rio awakens from a nightmare determined to seek revenge, only to be haunted by memories of a life he never lived—those of Amakawa Haruto.

Rio is enrolled in the primary school of the Beltrum Royal Academy as a reward for rescuing Princess Flora, but he faces hostility from other students, most of whom come from noble families. Celia, a young but capable lecturer and teacher at the academy, takes notice of Rio's struggles, particularly his inability to read, and begins giving him private lessons after school.

Five years after enrolling at the Royal Academy, Rio prepares for the outdoor practicum, a key part of the graduation examination. As he discusses his post-graduation plans to visit the Yagumo region, Celia listens with mixed emotions. During the practicum, a monster attack injures Stewart, who accidentally pushes Princess Flora off a cliff, prompting Rio to dive and save her, sustaining a serious fall in the process.

Rio arrives in the market town of Amande in the kingdom of Galarc, intrigued by local dishes that remind him of his memories of Japan and the possible connection to their creator, Liselotte. As he leaves the town and enters the forest, he encounters a young girl who suddenly attacks him with a knife after he tries to help her.

Rio and Latifa find themselves in a forest in the Wilderness, where they are discovered by a group of demi-humans. After revealing themselves as People of the Spirits, they are confronted by Uzuma, a winged beast person, who attacks Rio after spotting Latifa, believing she has been taken. The attack leaves Rio unconscious, and in his dreams, he encounters a mysterious girl with pink-blonde hair and Ayase Miharu, a childhood friend of Amakawa Hayato.

One year after arriving in the village, Rio is honored as a sworn friend of the People of the Spirits during the Grand Spirit Festival, blessed by the tree spirit Dryas. As the celebration continues, Rio announces his plan to leave, prompting Latifa to flee into the forest. At the same time, the village detects an airborne threat, leading warriors to discover a massive wyvern swarm approaching.

After leaving the village of the People of the Spirits, Rio travels to Yaugumo, the land of his parents, only to find no trace of them. He meets Yuba, the leader of a village in the Karasuki Kingdom, who is stunned when he reveals his parents' names, revealing a deep connection between them. With Yuba's suggestion, Rio begins a peaceful life in the village with its people, including his cousin Ruri and Sayo, until tensions arise when Sayo's older brother, Shin, gets into a conflict with villagers from a neighboring area.

Rio and Sayo explore the castle town of Karasuki after completing their duties as guards for the village's tribute. When warriors attempt to abduct a young girl named Komomo, Rio intervenes and rescues her. Later, Komomo's family, including her brother Hayate and father Gouki, approach Rio to reveal they once served his mother, Ayame.

Determined to avenge his mother, Rio decides to return to the dangerous Strahl region, but before leaving, he spends quiet, joyful time in the village, revealing his royal past only to his cousin Ruri. As spring arrives, Sayo, upon hearing of Rio's impending departure, returns home and is overcome with emotion, prompting her brother Shin to take action and plead with Rio to remain.

Returning to his village, Rio discovers a mysterious, unnamed girl beside him the next morning. As confusion arises, it becomes clear she is his bond spirit, whom he names Aishia. A powerful spirit named Dryas appears and encourages Rio and Aishia to engage in combat to assess her abilities.

Rio is surprised to learn that Celia is marrying Charles Arbor in a union that appears to be based on practicality rather than love. With the wedding set for the next day, Rio uses Aishia's magical abilities to sneak into the palace to see Celia, who greets him warmly but affirms her commitment to the marriage. The following day, a grand procession makes its way to the temple for the wedding ceremony.

As Celia's wedding carriage arrives at the grand temple, a mysterious figure, Rio, darts through the crowd and seizes her, overpowering the guards. Confronted by Rio's earnest emotions, Celia finally reveals her true feelings. Meanwhile, beams of light shoot into the sky from various locations across the Strahl region, forming six towering pillars.

Rio, having just rescued Celia from her wedding, sees six pillars of light and follows them at Aishia's request, discovering three unexpected individuals who require his assistance.

Rio accompanies Celia and Miharu to Amande to purchase supplies, with Miharu initially overwhelmed but gradually becoming engaged in the experience. Meanwhile, in the Beltrum Kingdom, a mysterious Hero makes an appearance before Princess Flora.

Rio visits the Village of the Spirits to make a special request, during which he shares a private moment with Latifa. At the same time, Liselotte presents an invitation to a royal event to Sakata, while Miharu and the group face a sudden monster attack.

Sakata, Flora, and others take shelter in a room, but it is attacked by Revenants, forcing Sakata to defend them while Flora escapes into the hallway, only to encounter new threats. Rio becomes aware of an anomaly and investigates on his own.

Miharu awakens in the Village of Spirits after a disturbing dream, while Rio confronts the man who kidnapped Flora, Lucius. Rio attempts to subdue Lucius with composure, but his calm demeanor only angers Lucius, who seeks to provoke him into exposing his real identity.

Flora attempts to talk to Rio, but the conversation does not go as planned. Liselotte and the others express their gratitude by offering Rio something in return, prompting him to ask for a specific favor. He then returns to the village to share his findings with Miharu and the others.
