Shaka Zulu

In 1823, the Zulu Empire, led by the formidable military leader Shaka, begins to expand toward the British colony of Cape Town, prompting the colony's governor to seek help from King George IV. With no reinforcements available, the British send a small team—including Lt. Francis Farewell and Dr. Henry Fynn—along with a group of volunteers to Zululand to make contact with Shaka and evaluate the potential threat posed by his growing army.

Shipwrecked British travelers are taken to Shaka's capital, Kwa Bulawayo, where they meet the Zulu leader and his mother, Nandi. Shaka asserts his authority before the visitors, demonstrating his strength and influence over his people.

Dr. Fynn traces the origins of Shaka's rise to power through the forbidden relationship between Nandi and Prince Senzangakona of the Zulu tribe. Despite societal and familial obstacles, including Senzangakona's existing marriage and Nandi's father's efforts to arrange her marriage, the couple continues their relationship, resulting in Nandi's pregnancy. She gives birth to a son, whom she names Shaka, meaning "beetle.

Nandi's father insists that the Zulu people acknowledge Nandi and her son Shaka. Senzangakona, now Zulu king, marries Nandi but mistreats her, leading Shaka to confront and threaten him. Nandi and Shaka leave for her homeland but face rejection and must flee again.

Shaka, now a young man, is invited by his father, Senzangakona, to return to Zululand and take his place as heir. After a conflict during a ceremony forces him to flee, he is accepted by another tribe, where his unconventional military ideas put him at odds with the established commanders.

Shaka ventures into the Nkandla forest to commission a blacksmith to create a specialized stabbing spear called the "ixwa." Upon returning, he presents his new military strategy to the king, which is tested successfully against the Zulu. Following the king's death, Shaka seizes power and ascends the throne.

Farewell and his men are invited to stay with Shaka, who is seriously injured in an assassination attempt and treated by Dr. Fynn. As a reward for saving his life, Shaka grants Farewell land and permission to hunt elephants. Meanwhile, news spreads in Cape Town that both Shaka and Farewell have died.

Farewell and his men set up Port Natal along the coast, but growing homesickness among the soldiers leads to unrest. Shaka compels them to remain by enlisting their support in a conflict with a rival tribe. Using their firepower strategically, he pressures the enemy into attacking first, securing a decisive Zulu victory.

Farewell requests assistance in building a boat to return to Cape Town, and Shaka agrees but detains most of Farewell's group, including Dr. Fynn. Upon arriving in Cape Town, Farewell and a Zulu delegation are met with hostility by Lord Somerset. Meanwhile, Shaka, upon learning of his wife's childbirth, orders the infant's death to secure his rule, and later begs Dr. Fynn to save his ailing wife, Nandi.

A prophecy long foretold is fulfilled as peace talks between the Zulu Empire and Great Britain collapse. With the death of Queen Mother Nandi and his own fate seemingly sealed, Shaka descends into self-destruction. Farewell returns to Zululand, where Shaka briefly abandons his violent rule before being murdered and his empire begins to collapse.
