Yoh Asakura, a young shaman, assists his classmate Manta in confronting a dangerous local bully by summoning the spirit of a legendary samurai.

Yoh and Manta meet the shaman Ren Tao, who brutally defeats a punk in combat. Offended by Ren's ruthless use of his abilities, Yoh challenges him to a fight.

Anna informs Yoh about a new tournament to determine the next Shaman King, while Jun, Ren's sister, challenges Yoh to a duel for the possession of Amidamaru.

Tokageroh possesses Ryu and captures Manta, forcing Yoh and Amidamaru into a battle. Despite their efforts, they struggle against Tokageroh, who uses the powerful weapon Harusame to gain the upper hand.

Silva, one of the Patch Officiants, challenges Yoh by summoning his five animal spirits to test his worthiness for the Shaman Fight.

Yoh, now eligible for the Shaman Fight, competes against Horohoro, an Ainu shaman from Hokkaido who wields ice and snow in battle.

Faust VIII, a powerful necromancer capable of controlling corpses, provokes Yoh by subjecting Manta to cruel experiments prior to their contest.
