*Sharpe* is a British television drama series starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, a fictional British soldier during the Napoleonic Wars. Sharpe is the central character in a series of novels by Bernard Cornwell; most, though not all, of the episodes are based on these books. The series was produced by Celtic Films and Picture Palace Films for the ITV network and was primarily filmed in Turkey and the Crimea, with additional filming in England, Spain, and Portugal. The original run of the series took place from 1993 to 1997. In 2004, as part of ITV's new drama lineup, the network announced plans to produce new *Sharpe* episodes in co-production with BBC America, loosely based on Sharpe's time in India, with Sean Bean reprising his role. *Sharpe's Challenge*, a two-part episode, premiered on ITV on 23 April 2006 for part one, with part two airing the following night. Featuring more graphic violence than earlier episodes, the series was broadcast by BBC America in September 2006.
