Shiki

Megumi, a high school student, longs to escape the quiet village of Sotoba and start a new life in the city after graduation. Her only reasons for staying are her fascination with the newly constructed European-style mansion on the hill and her feelings for the boy Yuuki Natsuno.

Megumi's sudden death leads to a funeral, and Doctor Ozaki, surprised by the circumstances, seeks to conduct an autopsy to uncover the cause, but his request is denied by Megumi's father.

Dr. Ozaki suspects that Nao Yasumori has the same mysterious illness that killed Megumi and others in the village. Despite conducting multiple tests, the results are inconclusive and do not match any known disease. Nao ultimately dies under unexplained circumstances, similar to the previous victims.

Dr. Ozaki convenes a staff meeting at the clinic and warns that an undiagnosed epidemic may be responsible for 19 deaths in the town. He urges the team to monitor for symptoms without alerting the public to avoid causing widespread panic.

Seishin interviews the families of recent victims and uncovers a pattern: many became seriously ill shortly before death, had quit their jobs beforehand, and several families abruptly moved away in the night.

Natsuno looks into local legends of the "Risen" after discovering that the fragments of Megumi's discarded letter have been tampered with. Meanwhile, Masao is confined to bed with unexplained bite wounds, following the death of his brother Hiromi under similar mysterious circumstances.

Masao wakes up buried in a flower-covered grave, six feet underground. Natsuno teams up with Kaori and Akira to exhume Megumi's body to determine whether she is truly dead or has somehow returned. Meanwhile, Dr. Ozaki, after a strange meeting with Natsuno, begins to suspect vampires are behind the village's unexplained deaths and decides to monitor his newest patient to test his theory.

Natsuno, Kaori, and Akira investigate Megumi's grave to determine if she has truly returned, only to find her coffin empty and Kaori attacked by a mysterious, corpse-like man. Meanwhile, Natsuno's parents encounter an unknown girl who arrives at their home asking to be let inside.

Dr. Ozaki and Seishin attempt to save an elderly patient's life as a blood transfusion temporarily restores her health, leading Dr. Ozaki to believe he has found a cure. That night, he receives undeniable evidence that the plague is part of a larger vampire conspiracy, putting them in a desperate position to either join or face death.

A strange girl visits the Natsuno household and insists on being let inside. When Natsuno returns, his parents mention the girl, but she has disappeared. He soon realizes the implications of her visit and prepares for a dangerous encounter, only to be surprised by who arrives.

As the villagers of Sotoba discuss the mysterious deaths occurring in their town, the local shaman accuses the residents of the Kanemasa mansion of being responsible.

Natsuno uncovers new information about the Shiki and urges Kaori and Akira to evacuate the town before a crisis escalates.

Dr. Ozaki discovers his wife is in the late stages of a mysterious blood-draining illness, and after she dies overnight, he announces his intention to care for her, raising questions about how to tend to someone who is no longer alive.

Kaori's father suffers a sudden collapse, prompting Dr. Ozaki to examine the body of his wife, who has recently died, in search of insights into fighting the Shiki.

Dr. Ozaki attempts to warn the townspeople about the supernatural events but is dismissed as stressed and overworked. Frustrated, he tries to document the situation and expose the truth, only to discover that the Shiki have manipulated official records to hide all deaths. After a discouraging encounter, Dr. Ozaki finds some hope when Natsuno assures him he is not alone.

Akira and Kaori discover their critically ill mother and begin making preparations to protect her, with Akira retrieving protective talismans from a temple and Kaori crafting stakes. Meanwhile, Tooru attends a tea with Sunako and discovers her true identity as a Shiki.

Seishin discovers his father, who had been bedridden, has vanished mysteriously. Kaori arrives at the temple, disheveled and frantic, pleading with Seishin to grant her last rites in preparation for Megumi's impending attack, which she believes will claim her life along with the rest of her family.

Natsuno is visited by Tatsumi, who reveals he is one of only four Shiki who can remain in sunlight without transforming. Meanwhile, Tooru discovers Ritsuko, a nurse, has turned into a Shiki but refuses to drink blood. At the same time, Dr. Ozaki manipulates Chizuru into attending a town festival, using her vanity to further his plan to destroy the Shiki.

The village begins to take Dr. Ozaki's warnings about the Shiki seriously and starts planning their eradication. Meanwhile, Sunako, upon learning of Chizuro's death, instructs Tatsumi to ready the Shiki to either kill or turn the remaining villagers.

As the first day ends, the village has killed many Shiki, but Dr. Ozaki suspects most have escaped. Tooru faces a difficult choice regarding Ritsuko's refusal to drink blood, and as the second day begins, the Shiki reveal a new method of attack.

The villagers locate Sunako's hiding place, prompting Tatsumi to create a diversion to draw them away while Seishin attempts to rescue her.

A wildfire rages up the mountain, putting the town in grave danger, while the remaining Shiki attempt one last push to flee.
