Shillingbury Tales
A quirky cast of villagers navigates the absurdities of rural life in this charming, laughter-track-free comedy-drama set in an idyllic English village.
Shillingbury Tales was a British television sitcom and comedy-drama series produced by ATV for ITV and broadcast between 1980 and 1981. The series consisted of a single feature-length pilot and six one-hour episodes, portraying life in an idealised fictional English village. It starred Robin Nedwell, Diane Keen, Nigel Lambert, Jack Douglas, John Le Mesurier, Bernard Cribbins, and Trevor Howard. The series was preceded by a feature-length pilot episode titled The Shillingbury Blowers, starring Trevor Howard, which aired on 6 January 1980. Written by Francis Essex and directed by Val Guest, the show was unusual for a British situation comedy at the time in that it was recorded entirely on location using 16mm film, and did not include a laughter track. Much of the filming took place in the village of Aldbury in Hertfordshire. The series concluded when ATV lost its broadcasting licence, and their replacement, Central, chose not to continue production. Shillingbury Tales was broadcast in several countries across Europe.
