Shogun

In early 17th-century Japan, English navigator John Blackthorne, shipwrecked and stranded, navigates a complex feudal society centered on honor and tradition, only to face a death sentence from a rival lord.

Lord Toronaga frees Blackthorn from prison and appoints him as his aide, giving him the name "Anjin-san." Mariko is assigned to teach him the Japanese language and cultural customs.

Blackthorne and Mariko start a romantic relationship while Toranaga continues preparing his forces for an impending battle against Ishido. Anjin-san demonstrates his courage during an earthquake and is recognized by Toranaga for his bravery. Meanwhile, Mariko's husband, Buntaro, arrives in Anjiro.

Anjin-san demonstrates his adaptation to Japanese culture through his respectful behavior. Toranaga chooses to return the ship *Erasmus* to him. Meanwhile, Mariko informs Father Alvito about a conspiracy to assassinate a Christian member of the Council of Regents.

Treachery and conflict lead to significant changes in power as Toronaga is declared shogun following Lord Ishido's defeat. Mariko dies during the final battle at Osaka Castle, and Blackthorne, though grieving, begins building a new ship.
