Solid Gold was an American syndicated music television series that premiered on September 13, 1980. Similar to other shows in the genre, such as American Bandstand, it featured musical performances and music videos. The show was distinguished by a troupe of dancers in revealing costumes who performed to the week's top ten hits. The dancers also appeared in specials performing to older pop songs. The New York Times criticized the show, calling it "the pop music show that is its own parody...[enacting] mini-dramas...of covetousness, lust and aerobic toning--routines that typically have a minimal connection with the songs that back them up." The series concluded on July 23, 1988, and was typically broadcast on Saturday evenings. In 1986, the show incorporated the current year into its title, becoming Solid Gold '86/'87 for its seventh season. The eighth and final season was titled Solid Gold In Concert, highlighting an increased focus on live performances compared to previous seasons.
