Sanna is a 21-year-old woman and the daughter of a wealthy landowner in southern Sweden. Her father, Bengt, earns his fortune by leasing his large inherited estate to hardworking family farmers, many of whom find it difficult to sustain their livelihoods. Bengt is a strict and unyielding figure who wields significant influence over those with fewer resources. Sanna wrestles with the prospect of becoming her father's heir. When she begins a romantic relationship with Marcus, the impoverished son of a neighboring farmer, Bengt gives her an ultimatum: end the relationship with Marcus or forfeit her inheritance.
