Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is a student at the Tristain Academy of Magic, where her lengthy name and lack of spell-casting ability have earned her the nickname "Louise the Zero." Her embarrassment grows during an important second-year test when she unexpectedly summons Hiraga Saito, an ordinary high school student from Tokyo. As a result, Saito is bound to Louise as her familiar, thrusting him into a life far removed from his normal one.

Saito interrupts, breaking Louise's trance and attempting to rescue her, prompting Wardes to kill the prince and reveal his allegiance to the rebel group Reconquista.

    The group discovers a rare dragon, which is later identified as a Mitsubishi Zero-sen, a Japanese aircraft from World War II, based on a map from Siesta's family. They bring it back to the school, where Colbert mentions a previous attempt to use an aircraft during a solar eclipse that ended in disappearance. Saito theorizes that the person may have returned to their original time and sees this as an opportunity to do the same.
