The Last Alaskans
In 1980, the U.S. government prohibited new human settlement in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a protected area that is home to thousands of native animals and features pristine terrain covering approximately the size of South Carolina. At present, only a small number of families living in seven authorized cabins are permitted to remain in the refuge. Within less than 100 years, all existing permits will expire, resulting in the absence of any human presence in the area.
