Three years after 2% of the world's population vanished, the residents of Mapleton, New York, debate whether to hold a "Heroes Day" tribute for the missing. Police chief Kevin Garvey attempts to manage growing community tensions while dealing with his indifferent daughter, Jill, his son's association with a cult, and the enigmatic presence of the Guilty Remnant, a silent group of smokers dressed in white who observe the town. As tensions escalate, Laurie, an unexpected member of the Guilty Remnant, and Meg, a newly engaged woman, find their lives becoming increasingly connected.

Kevin begins therapy to cope with disturbing experiences, while Tom deals with a strained relationship with Christine, who is connected to Wayne. Meg has difficulty parting with meaningful possessions, and Jill and Aimee look into the case of Nora Durst, whose family disappeared during the unexplained event known as the Departure.

Reverend Matt Jamison is focused on preserving his congregation and preventing his church from being foreclosed, all while dealing with threats and advocating his controversial view that many of those who disappeared during the Departure were unworthy. As time dwindles, his attempts to save the church push him to take increasingly drastic actions.

As the anniversary of the Departure approaches, Kevin Garvey, Sr. sets out on a journey through the Australian Outback, motivated by a vision he is unable to determine is divine or delusional, in a desperate effort to prevent the end of the world.

Kevin and Nora travel to Australia, where Nora investigates the perpetrators of a sophisticated scam, while Kevin meets someone from his past that forces him to confront a traumatic event from three years earlier.

Matt Jamison goes to Australia to bring Kevin back to Miracle for the town's seventh-anniversary celebration, believing it to be part of Kevin's destiny. However, divine intervention disrupts his plans.

Laurie Garvey, a former therapist, returns to her profession by traveling to Australia to support Nora and Kevin in their personal journeys.

Kevin assumes a new identity to carry out a compassionate mission.
