To fulfill his father's last will, the Cossack Aljoha travels abroad to pay homage to the Virgin Mary. His journey leads him through the Ottoman Empire, where he is captured and becomes a janissary named Ali. Despite this, nothing can deter a free Cossack. Aljoha remains hopeful that he will regain his freedom, complete his father's task, find love, and return to his homeland.
