The Shield and the Sword
In 1940, Nazi Germany is at the peak of its military dominance, having occupied much of Europe and turning its attention toward the Soviet Union in the east. The Russian military command, suspecting Germany's hostile intentions, organizes its spies to infiltrate the German military and the SS. Alexander Belov is a Russian spy who travels from Soviet-controlled Latvia to Nazi Germany under the alias Johann Weiss. His fluency in German, composure under pressure, and skill in manipulating others enable him to leverage his connections within the SS to rise through the ranks of German intelligence. Using his position, he identifies sympathetic Germans who assist him in obtaining crucial intelligence and in supporting local resistance movements in their efforts against Nazism.
