The Temptations

The Temptations were formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, by five young African American singers: Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and Elbridge "Al" Bryant. Originally called the "Elgins," the group was signed to Motown Records in 1961 after being discovered by Berry Gordy. The group's early lineup was later altered when Bryant was replaced by Richard "Ricky" Hendricks, who was soon replaced by David Ruffin. The Temptations became one of Motown's most successful acts, known for their smooth harmonies, choreography, and a mix of doo-wop, soul, and pop influences. Their career spanned decades, during which they recorded numerous hit songs, including "My Girl," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." Over the years, the group underwent several lineup changes, with Otis Williams being the only original member to remain with the group throughout its history. The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and are widely regarded as one of the most influential vocal groups in the history of American music.
