The Territory

Victor Gromov, once a notorious figure in Moscow’s criminal underworld known by the nickname “Butcher,” has since retired and now lives a quiet life on his farm. One day, his former associates visit and demand that he use his offshore bank account to store the mafia’s common fund. With no choice but to comply, Victor agrees. Months later, on the day he is supposed to return the money, he is struck on the head by a falling billboard, causing him to lose the password to his account. Fleeing from his former criminal contacts, Victor hides in a freight train’s boxcar but gets locked inside. The train departs, and after several days, he arrives thousands of kilometers from Moscow in a remote northern town named Polyarny, a place he soon discovers is difficult to leave.
