Time Warp

*Time Warp* is a science-themed television program produced for the Discovery Channel in the United States. The show is hosted by Jeff Lieberman, an MIT scientist, teacher, and artist, who collaborates with high-speed camera expert Matt Kearney. Together, they use high-speed cameras to examine everyday occurrences and unique talents. The series captures common events and replays them in slow motion to reveal the underlying principles of physics. Subjects include a drop of water, explosions, gunshots, ballet dancing, cornflour, shallow water diving, X Games, and occasionally unusual actions such as piercing one's cheek or standing on blades. The high-speed cameras used in the show operate at speeds ranging from 500 frames per second for capturing how dogs drink, up to 40,000 frames per second for capturing bullets and breaking glass. Recordings above 20,000 frames per second are shot in black and white, as the data for lightness and darkness is reduced when there is no color information. This is due to the digital nature of the recording, which limits the frame rate to a specific data rate, with black and white footage requiring less data than full color.
