Touched by an Angel

Monica begins her first assignment as a case worker after being promoted from search and rescue, meeting David Morrow, a boy who claims his mother and sister died in a car accident. After helping him at school, she visits his home and meets his father, a police detective seeking a live-in nanny, and she is hired immediately. Soon after, she encounters Adam, the Angel of Death, who reveals that while David's sister died of crib death, his mother is actually alive.

Monica is assigned as an assistant coach to Earl Rowley, a gruff former baseball player whose career was cut short by a Vietnam War injury. Earl is particularly hard on Peter Enloe, the team's star player who lost his father, and is initially resistant to having a female assistant, though he is told Monica is the most qualified substitute available. Meanwhile, Tess takes a job at a local sports bar owned by Peter's mother, Laura.

Monica, an angel working as a personal assistant, becomes concerned about Elizabeth Jessup, a respected journalist, who is struggling with alcoholism. After Elizabeth drinks excessively at her granddaughter's birthday party and later embarrasses herself at a public event, her daughter Sydney, with the help of a counselor, stages an intervention to address the issue.

Monica, struggling with a fear of water, moves next door to Angela Evans, a passionate boater with a hidden past. Angela, once a college student who worked as a call girl, is now being blackmailed by Marshall, her former pimp, as her husband runs for Senate. Monica encourages Angela to confront Marshall, but discovers he possesses incriminating photos of her.

Cassie Peter gives birth to a daughter and intends to put the child up for adoption, but changes her mind after meeting the baby and flees the hospital. Monica, posing as a nurse, and Tess monitor the situation, later learning from Adam that the infant is seriously ill.

Monica works as a legal assistant to Charles Hibbard, a young lawyer who unintentionally gives an inheritance to the eccentric Robin and tries to persuade her to return it. Suffering from hypochondria and an imagined heart condition, Charles gradually opens up with Monica's support and develops feelings for Robin.

Monica and Tess orchestrate a collision on a remote road involving Megan and Susana, who are both romantically involved with the same man. With the help of Adam, the angels arrange a Thanksgiving gathering at an estate that brings the women and Susana's husband together. Monica encourages Megan to seek a new relationship, while Tess persuades Jack to reconcile with his wife.

Monica and Tess work as party coordinators for Harrison Trowbridge Archibald IV, a formal and rigid doctor, as his wife Barbara and his mother Amelia organize an upscale event to celebrate a new hospital wing named after their family.

A small town prepares for its Christmas pageant as Serena, a young girl with a heart condition, dreams of playing the angel. Her friend Joey, who is afraid of the dark and struggles with the absence of his parents, is cared for by his resentful older brother Wayne. After Serena's death on the night of the pageant, Joey is guided to the church by a bright star, where Monica, taking Serena's place, ascends in a miraculous display of light and delivers a message of comfort and hope.

Monica loses her angelic powers while helping Pete, a proud homeless man, and befriends Sophie, a woman seeking family reunification, and Zack, a Desert Storm veteran. After reflecting on her judgments of the homeless, Monica prays and washes Pete's feet. With divine assistance, Pete is able to travel to Colorado to scatter his wife's ashes.

Three years after defusing a deadly hostage situation by shooting the armed perpetrator who had killed his partner, Sheriff James Mackey is celebrated as a local hero. Journalist Monica is writing about him, but Mackey's strict expectations for his son Matthew lead to the boy cheating on an important exam and later attempting suicide. While Matthew is in a coma, Monica uses her spiritual gifts to encourage him to recover, and she also helps Mackey come to terms with his guilt over his partner's death, ultimately healing the rift between father and son.
