TV Pirata
TV Pirata was a weekly Brazilian comedy show that aired on Rede Globo from 1988 to 1990, with monthly re-airings in 1992. It was first broadcast in April 1988 to fill a gap in the network's Tuesday night prime time lineup. The show's comedy was influenced by sketch comedy programs such as Saturday Night Live and Monty Python's Flying Circus, blending a no-nonsense approach with elements of Brazilian culture including football, politics, pop culture, telenovelas, economics, and celebrities. No well-known figure or member of any economic or social class was exempt from the show's sharp humor. The premise revolved around a TV studio being invaded by pirates who took over the programming department and aired a tape featuring "unusual" programming. A new element for Brazilian audiences was the use of dramatic actors in comedic roles, rather than the typical comedic performers. Some of the show's writers later formed the comedy troupe Casseta & Planeta.
