In 2033, individuals nearing death can be "uploaded" into virtual reality hotels operated by six technology companies. Nora, who is financially struggling, resides in Brooklyn and works in customer service for the upscale digital afterlife known as "Lakeview." When Nathan, a Los Angeles-based party enthusiast and coder, is involved in a self-driving car accident, his demanding girlfriend chooses to permanently upload him into Nora's virtual reality world.
