*Yo soy Betty, la fea* is a Colombian telenovela written by Fernando Gaitán and produced by RCN from October 25, 1999, to May 8, 2001. The show has inspired more than a dozen international adaptations in other countries. In the United States, the comedy-drama *Ugly Betty* and the Televisa program *La Fea Más Bella* are based on the original Colombian soap opera. The telenovela re-aired on the Spanish-language U.S. network TeleFutura in January 2009. Eight years after its original run, the return of the original version of *Yo soy Betty, la fea* achieved strong ratings, drawing over one million viewers, more than half a million of whom were adults aged 18–49. The premiere episode doubled, and in some cases nearly tripled, its previous audience figures among key demographics. Due to the success of the U.S. re-runs, *Yo soy Betty, la fea* was re-aired in Mexico on Canal de las Estrellas in June 2009. The telenovela is considered one of the most successful in history and among the most popular television shows globally.
