Yusuke Urameshi, a delinquent known for skipping school and brawling with his rival Kuwabara, unexpectedly saves a young boy by pushing him out of the path of an oncoming car at the cost of his own life. This act of selflessness marks a turning point, raising questions about what the future holds for this impulsive teenager.

Yusuke is taken to the Spirit World by Botan, a cheerful spirit guide, where he meets Koenma, a young-looking ruler who is actually 700 years old. Koenma assigns Yusuke a serious task: to hatch a powerful Spirit Beast as part of a test to prove his worth.

Kuwabara struggles with the guilt of his rival Yusuke's death, knowing he had lost every one of their 156 fights and can never make things right. Now that Yusuke is gone, Kuwabara becomes the new target for challengers, making many enemies. Yusuke, though not close to Kuwabara, must help him from the afterlife if he wants to reclaim his life.

Koenma dispatches an investigator to determine if Yusuke Urameshi still has a place in the human world, as the Spirit World considers his return. When a fire endangers Yusuke's body, his friends act to save him, but Yusuke faces a difficult choice: use his Spirit Beast to ensure his own survival or risk everything to help his friends.

Yusuke, now back in the human world, must find someone to kiss him before his time runs out, with Kuwabara as a possible candidate. He discovers he can see spirits and immediately tracks down a demon criminal, realizing his new role as a Spirit Detective has just begun.

Yusuke Urameshi is assigned his first major case as a Spirit Detective when three demon thieves infiltrate King Yama's secure vault and steal the powerful Artifacts of Darkness. Tasked with retrieving the stolen relics, Yusuke must confront the thieves and prevent them from using the artifacts' dangerous powers to harm the world.

Yusuke must stop the clumsy demon Gouki, who has stolen the Orb of Baast and is capturing children's souls, before they are consumed. However, Yusuke faces an unexpected challenge when another thief named Kurama appears and makes an unexpected request.

Yusuke, having obtained two artifacts, faces his greatest threat in the form of the dangerous demon Hiei. Unaware that Hiei is pursuing him, Yusuke discovers that Hiei has kidnapped his girlfriend, Keiko. To save her from becoming a mindless demon slave, Yusuke must retrieve an antidote hidden within Hiei's Shadow Sword.

Yusuke's brief vacation ends when Botan assigns him a new mission: to participate in Genkai's contest to find an apprentice for her powerful Spirit Wave technique. Unbeknownst to most, a demon named Rando seeks to steal the technique for destructive purposes. Yusuke goes undercover to infiltrate Genkai's training compound and prevent the theft.

The final round of Genkai's apprenticeship selection takes the form of a tournament held in complete darkness, with eight remaining candidates, including Yusuke, Kuwabara, and the disguised demon Rando. Kuwabara faces a fierce opponent wielding a supernatural sword in the opening match.

Yusuke competes in a dimly lit arena where he is blindfolded, giving his opponent, Kibano, a significant advantage through the use of advanced technology. If Yusuke manages to overcome Kibano, he must quickly prepare for another intense fight against a deadly ninja.

Yusuke, Kuwabara, and young Shorin remain in the Genkai Tournament, with Rando's whereabouts still unknown, raising questions about Shorin's true identity. As the battle continues on a haunted field, Kuwabara prepares to fight Shorin while the possibility of a hidden demon lingers.

Yusuke, severely weakened, must confront the powerful demon Rando, who has revealed his true form and possesses numerous deadly techniques, while his allies Kuwabara and Shorin are either incapacitated or missing.

Yusuke returns from training with Genkai just as Makai Insects begin invading his city, hinting at a larger plan to unleash demons on Earth. Joined by Kuwabara, he ventures into a forbidden demon city to confront the powerful Saint Beasts.

Kurama and Hiei, former adversaries of Yusuke, join forces with him and Kuwabara to confront the Saint Beasts. The uneasy team faces challenges as they navigate the treacherous Gate of Betrayal. They soon encounter the first Saint Beast, a massive creature made entirely of stone.

Kuwabara, determined to avenge his injured teammate, challenges the next enemy alone, showcasing his greatly enhanced Spirit Sword. As tensions rise, the group is interrupted by the arrival of Byakko, the second of the Four Saint Beasts, which lets out a powerful roar and prepares for battle.

Byakko appears to be defeated after a fierce battle on a collapsing bridge, but the Spirit Detective team quickly faces another challenge as they enter the next wing of the castle. A powerful tiger emerges, forcing Kuwabara into a second confrontation in Byakko's hidden lair. The team must now battle the beast in a dangerous chamber filled with molten lava.

Yusuke and his team believe two of the four Saint Beasts are dead, but in Seiryu's chamber, where enemies can be trapped in ice, an unexpected visitor arrives, raising questions about how two Beasts can coexist in one place. Meanwhile, Hiei, usually indifferent and detached, begins to experience unexpected emotions.

The group advances to the castle's final chamber to confront Suzaku, unaware that he is plotting to capture Keiko.

Suzaku employs the Prism of Seven technique to generate seven distinct versions of himself, each possessing independent will and full power, with the intent of tormenting and destroying Yusuke.

Suzaku attacks with a powerful lightning fist, but Yusuke counters by summoning his full strength and firing a powerful spirit gun.

Yukina, a mystical ice apparition whose tears turn into valuable gems, is captured by the human crime lord Tarukane, who intends to force her to produce more through torture. Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan launch a rescue mission, but Hiei is kept in the dark about the operation for reasons unknown.

Yusuke and his team press onward toward Tarukane's mountain fortress, encountering a host of monstrous demon guards along the way. An uneasy alliance between human criminals and hired demon forces complicates their journey. Meanwhile, Kuwabara remains undeterred, expressing his deep feelings for Yukina.

Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan reach the gates of Tarukane's fortress but are confronted by the Triad, three formidable demon fighters. As the Spirit Detectives battle each unique and powerful opponent one after another, they must push through to rescue Yukina from her suffering.

Yusuke and Kuwabara face off against the formidable Toguro Brothers in a high-stakes battle to rescue Yukina, while Kurama tries to stop Hiei from carrying out his own dangerous plan inside Tarukane's fortress.
