BBS Productions

The American film renaissance found an unexpected origin in a television success. Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson, creators of the pop group and sitcom *The Monkees*, used the profits to pursue more ambitious projects. Along with Stephen Blauner, they rebranded Raybert Productions as BBS — Bert, Bob and Steve — and secured a unique deal with Columbia Pictures: as long as a film's budget remained under a million dollars, the filmmakers retained creative control and final cut.

This arrangement led to a body of work that became central to the New Hollywood movement. *Easy Rider*, made almost as an experiment, became a cultural phenomenon in 1969 and demonstrated that a low-budget, countercultural film could outperform the big studio productions. Other BBS films followed with similar boldness: Rafelson's *Five Easy Pieces*, featuring Jack Nicholson as a drifting outsider; Peter Bogdanovich's *The Last Picture Show*; *The King of Marvin Gardens*; *Drive, He Said*; and *A Safe Place*. These films were introspective, politically engaged, and distinct from the polished style of traditional studio output.

Bert Schneider's political stance played a key role in the company's identity and eventual decline. In 1974, BBS produced *Hearts and Minds*, an Academy Award-winning anti-war documentary that sparked controversy when Schneider delivered a message from the Viet Cong at the ceremony. The film marked the company's final major project.

BBS did not collapse in a formal sense but gradually faded as the cultural and financial conditions that had enabled it changed. The partnership dissolved, the low-budget model lost its appeal, and the major studios refocused on big-budget spectacles. By the mid-1970s, the company was effectively defunct — a brief but influential five-year period that outshone the output of many longer-lived studios.
