Synopsis
A British Picture is the updated autobiography of Britain’s most controversial film director, known for his films *Women in Love*, *The Devils*, *The Music Lovers*, *Tommy*, and *The Rainbow*. The book is as unconventional and accomplished as his best films, moving with confidence through time and space as Russell recounts his life in a series of interconnected episodes. These include his childhood in Southampton in the 1930s, his first sexual experience (watching Disney’s *Pinocchio*), his schooldays at the Nautical College, Pangbourne, his early careers in the Merchant Marine and the Royal Air Force, his time dancing at the Shepherds Bush Ballet Club, and his film-making career, beginning with an extraordinary interview with Huw Weldon for a job on *Monitor*. The book is filled with humorous anecdotes and insightful observations about the realities of being a film director, making it a notable autobiography.
