Augustine of Hippo

Augustine of Hippo, later recognized as a saint in the Christian tradition, was ordained a bishop in 396 and became the Bishop of Hippo in North Africa. During his episcopacy, he played a central role in addressing theological disputes, most notably the challenge posed by the Donatist and Pelagian heresies. His writings, including *The City of God*, were composed in part as responses to these doctrinal conflicts and to the fall of Rome in 410, an event that prompted reflection on the nature of divine justice and the relationship between the earthly and heavenly cities. As the Western Roman Empire continued to decline, Augustine's work sought to provide a theological framework for understanding the role of the Church in a world increasingly shaped by political instability and the rise of barbarian kingdoms.
