Everest: The Death Zone

This documentary follows a challenging ascent of Mount Everest, beginning at Base Camp at 17,600 feet and continuing through the Death Zone, a treacherous area littered with the remains of climbers who have perished. The journey reaches the summit, which stands 29,032 feet above sea level, more than five and a half miles above the Earth's surface. For those who survive the grueling climb, the experience is often life-changing. However, the extreme conditions—intense cold, high winds, blinding sunlight, and dangerously low oxygen levels—raise questions about whether such an ascent can cause lasting damage to the human brain and body. In the aftermath of the 1996 Everest disaster, in which eight climbers died in a single day, scientists accompany a group of hikers to study, for the first time, the physical effects of high-altitude climbing on the heart, lungs, blood, and brain. The film explores why climbers may make poor or fatal decisions as they approach the summit. The dangers continue during the descent, as one climber's respiratory illness escalates into a life-threatening situation on the remote mountain.
