Synopsis

Norman Dale, a former college basketball coach who failed in his career, is given a new opportunity when he is hired to coach a high school team in a small Indiana town. When a teacher convinces the team's star player, Jimmy Chitwood, to leave the team in order to focus on his neglected schoolwork, Dale faces the challenge of building a competitive team despite criticism from the community. His struggles are compounded by his temper and his decision to hire Shooter, a well-known alcoholic, as his assistant coach.
