Synopsis

Jeremy Clarkson recounts the story of what has been described as "the original Mission Impossible"—the daring Commando raid on the German-occupied dry dock at St. Nazaire in France on March 28, 1942. Codenamed Operation Chariot, the mission had a straightforward objective: to destroy the dry dock and thereby prevent the German battleship Tirpitz from having a secure base on the Atlantic coast of France. Although many considered the operation too dangerous, the Chief of Combined Operations, Louis Mountbatten, advocated for its execution. This programme examines the events of March 26, 1942, when the Commandos in Cornwall boarded their floating bomb and set out to determine whether the element of surprise could indeed overcome the formidable odds.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 13

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
