Karl Hess: Toward Liberty
Synopsis
Karl Hess was a libertarian intellectual and activist whose career spanned a range of political and social roles. In his youth, he worked as a magazine editor before becoming a speechwriter for the Republican Party, including for Barry Goldwater. During this time, he was also a member of Students for a Democratic Society. In the late 1960s, Hess entered a new phase of his life by relocating to rural West Virginia, where he became engaged with movements advocating for alternative technologies and renewable energy. He expressed strong opposition to large institutions, including government, corporations, and universities.
