The Broken Locket
Synopsis
George Peabody is a young man who has given free rein to his inclinations, the principal one being drink. Though it might have seemed he was beyond redemption, there remained the chance—offered by Providence in the form of Ruth King, a girl who had secretly loved him since childhood. Ruth persuades George to leave behind his reckless lifestyle, and he resolves to distance himself from his old companions by heading West to build a better life. Before departing, he says goodbye to Ruth and her mother, realizing he has come to love his young savior and vowing to return worthy of her affection and trust. The two exchange their first kiss and part with a heart-shaped locket, which Ruth breaks in two. George takes one half, and Ruth keeps the other, the broken locket symbolizing the eventual reunion of their hearts when he returns.
