Synopsis

Set in a small English regional theatre during World War II, *The Dresser* follows a troupe of touring actors preparing for a performance of Shakespeare's *King Lear*. As bombs fall and sirens wail, the actor-manager Sir, who is to play Lear, is missing just hours before the curtain is set to rise. His dresser, Norman, scrambles to keep the production on track, raising the questions of whether Sir will appear and, if he does, whether he will be able to perform. The play is a humorous and emotional exploration of friendship and loyalty, as Sir reflects on his career and attempts to mend his strained relationships with those around him before the final act.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 19

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
