The River King

Abel Grey is assigned to investigate the death of a boy from an exclusive local school who is found floating in the river. The school, fearing scandal, declares the incident a suicide. After learning from the boy’s girlfriend, Carlin, that he had been severely bullied, Abel suspects that a dangerous schoolboy initiation has gone tragically wrong and enlists the covert assistance of a sympathetic teacher, Betsy. His boss warns him to drop the investigation because the school is a generous benefactor of the Police Benevolent Fund. Abel persists, motivated by his brother’s earlier suicide and by what appears to be clues left by the dead boy’s spirit regarding the events of that night.
