Griffin Keyes is a kindhearted caretaker at the Franklin Park Zoo, where he is well-liked for his dedication to the animals. He is more at ease with them than with people, particularly women, as evidenced by his failed marriage proposal to Stephanie several years earlier. Stephanie is described as self-absorbed. After Stephanie returns to his life, the animals, who have long listened to Griffin's longing for her, decide to help him rekindle the relationship and become the kind of partner she desires. They reveal their secret ability to talk, initially shocking Griffin, and teach him the rules of courtship from an animal's perspective. To his surprise, the animals' advice proves effective, and Griffin begins to achieve what he has always wanted—though it may not be what he truly needs.
