Biography

Fredric March began his career in banking, but in 1920 he was cast as an extra in films being produced in New York. He made his Broadway stage debut in 1926 and returned to the stage between film appearances throughout his career. He received critical praise and an Academy Award nomination for his parody of John Barrymore in *The Royal Family of Broadway* (1930). He would later receive four additional Academy Award nominations and win the Oscar for Best Actor twice: for *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931) and *The Best Years of Our Lives* (1946). March was known for his versatility, playing roles ranging from heavy drama to light comedy, and was particularly effective in portraying men in distress, such as Willy Loman in *Death of a Salesman* (1951). As his career progressed, he transitioned from leading man to character actor.
