Biography
Grace Patricia Kelly was born on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to affluent parents. Her early life was largely uneventful, though she had decided by an early age that she wanted to become an actress. After graduating from high school in 1947, she moved to New York City to pursue her ambitions. There, she worked as a model and made her Broadway debut in 1949. She also briefly appeared on television before relocating to Southern California in pursuit of film opportunities. Her first film role came in 1951 with a small part in *Fourteen Hours*. The following year, she played Amy Kane in *High Noon*, a popular Western co-starring Gary Cooper and Lloyd Bridges. In 1953, she appeared in *Mogambo*, a jungle drama featuring Clark Gable and Ava Gardner. Although *High Noon* had brought her some attention, it was her collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock that launched her to stardom. Her standout performance in *Rear Window* (1954), in which she played Lisa Fremont opposite James Stewart, brought her widespread recognition. That same year, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Georgie Elgin in *The Country Girl*, co-starring Bing Crosby. In 1955, she reunited with Hitchcock in *To Catch a Thief*, co-starring Cary Grant. The following year, she appeared in *High Society*, a musical comedy co-starring Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, in which she played Tracy Lord remarrying her former husband, played by Crosby. The film was well received and marked her final acting role. By then, she had married Prince Rainier of Monaco, and she retired from acting to become a member of the principality’s royal family. She remained in the public eye due to her marriage and her three children. Grace Kelly died in an automobile accident on September 14, 1982, in Monaco at the age of 52.
