Biography

Hayao Miyazaki is a prominent Japanese animation director known for the engaging plots, well-developed characters, and visually striking style of his films, which have garnered international attention and public acclaim in Japan. Miyazaki began his career in 1963 as an animator at Toei Douga studio, where he contributed to several early classics of Japanese animation. From the start, he stood out for his strong drawing skills and the numerous film ideas he proposed. In 1971, he joined A Pro studio with Isao Takahata. In 1973, he moved to Nippon Animation, where he played a significant role in the World Masterpiece Theater TV animation series for the next five years. In 1978, he directed his first TV series, Future Boy Conan. In 1979, he transferred to Tokyo Movie Shinsha to direct his first feature film, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. In 1984, he released Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on the manga of the same name he had begun two years earlier. The film's success led to the founding of Studio Ghibli. Since then, he has directed, written, and produced many films with Takahata, and more recently, with Toshio Suzuki. These works have achieved critical and commercial success, particularly Princess Mononoke (1997), which won the Japanese equivalent of the Academy Award for Best Film and was the highest-grossing domestic film in Japan at the time, earning approximately USD $150 million. In addition to animation, Miyazaki also creates manga. His major work was Nausicaä, an epic story he worked on from 1982 to 1984 while making animated films. Another manga, Hikotei Jidai, later became the basis for Porco Rosso (1992).
