Biography

James Cagney was one of Hollywood's most prominent male stars, known for his versatility as an actor, accomplished dancer, and ability to perform light comedy. Born James Francis Cagney on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City, he was the son of Carolyn (Nelson) and James Francis Cagney, Sr., a bartender and amateur boxer. Cagney's heritage included Norwegian descent from his maternal grandfather and Irish roots. After a three-decade career in film, he retired to a farm in Stanfordville, New York, approximately 77 miles (124 km) north of his birthplace, following his role in Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three (1961). He briefly returned to acting in 1981 for the film adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel *Ragtime*, where he reunited with his 1930s co-star Pat O'Brien, marking their final theatrical film together. Cagney's last performance was in the title role of the made-for-TV movie *Terrible Joe Moran* (1984), opposite Art Carney.
