Biography
Jeannine Oppewall began her career in the film industry in the late 1970s, following a six-year collaboration with the design pioneers Charles and Ray Eames. She worked as a set designer on films including *Blue Collar*, *Blow Out*, *The Rose*, and *Honky Tonk Freeway* before becoming a production designer in 1983 with *Tender Mercies*, a modestly budgeted "slice of life" film that earned Robert Duvall an Academy Award.
Over the next several years, Oppewall designed a wide range of films for a variety of directors with international backgrounds. These include Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky (*Maria’s Lovers*), Brazilian director Hector Babenco (*Ironweed*), Costa-Gavras (*The Music Box*), and Luis Mandoki (*White Palace*). Other notable credits are *Love Letters*, *The Big Easy*, *Rooftops*, *Wonder Boys*, and *Sibling Rivalry*.
She is also known for her work on *Seabiscuit* (starring Jeff Bridges), *Catch Me If You Can* (directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio), *The Sum of All Fears* (starring Morgan Freeman), and *The Good Shepherd*, directed by Robert De Niro and released in late 2006.
Oppewall has received four Oscar Award nominations for her work and won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Production Design in 1998 for *Pleasantville*. She also received the Art Directors’ Guild award for Excellence in Production Design for *Catch Me If You Can* and was nominated for five other films in the same category. She served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for nine years and is currently co-chairperson of its Museum Committee.
