Biography
Lane Chandler (1899–1972) was an American actor known for his work in Westerns. In the early 1920s, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as an auto mechanic. His background growing up on a horse ranch led to bit parts in Western films starting in 1925 for Paramount Pictures. Studio executives recommended he adopt the name Lane Chandler, and he soon began landing leading roles, including his first in *The Legion of the Condemned*.
Chandler was successful as a silent film star, but with the arrival of talkies, he was often cast in supporting roles, such as in *The Great Mike* (1944). He appeared in several low-budget Westerns in the 1930s, frequently playing the leading man's partner, a sheriff, or an army officer. As television became more prominent, Chandler appeared on numerous Western series, including *The Lone Ranger*, *The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok*, *Lawman*, *Have Gun – Will Travel*, *Rawhide*, *Maverick*, *Cheyenne*, and *Gunsmoke*. He continued acting in television and film until 1966.
Chandler died in Los Angeles in 1972 at the age of 73, due to heart disease.
