Biography

Patti LaBelle, born Patricia Louise Holte, is an American R&B singer and actress known as the "Godmother of Soul." She began her career in the early 1960s as the lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, later known as Labelle. The group achieved success with the 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade." After the group disbanded in 1977, LaBelle launched a successful solo career in the 1980s with hits such as "If Only You Knew" and "On My Own," a duet with Michael McDonald that reached number one on the US charts. She won Grammy Awards in 1992 and 1999 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 2008, she reunited with her former Labelle bandmates for the album *Back to Now*.
