    Robert Bushnell Ryan was an American actor and activist renowned for his roles in film noir and Westerns, often portraying hardened anti-heroes and ruthless villains. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *Crossfire* (1947) and a BAFTA Award nomination for his role in *Billy Budd* (1962). In addition to his film career, Ryan was a distinguished stage actor, earning a Drama Desk Award for his performance in a 1971 revival of *Long Day's Journey into Night*.
