Biography

Catherine Rosalind Russell was an acclaimed American actress, comedian, and singer, best known for her sharp wit and comedic timing. She gained fame for her role as Hildy Johnson in the 1940 film *His Girl Friday*, directed by Howard Hawks and co-starring Cary Grant. Russell also delivered a memorable performance as Sylvia Fowler in George Cukor's *The Women* (1939), alongside Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She later portrayed Mame Dennis in the stage and film adaptations of *Auntie Mame* (1956 and 1958, respectively) and played Rose in *Gypsy* (1962). Russell received numerous accolades, including five Golden Globe Awards, a Tony Award, and four Academy Award nominations. She was also honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1973 and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 1975.
