Samuel Atkinson "Sam" Waterston (born November 15, 1940) is an American actor and occasional producer and director. He is known for his Academy Award-nominated performance as Sydney Schanberg in *The Killing Fields* (1984), as well as his Golden Globe- and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning role as Jack McCoy on the NBC television series *Law & Order*. Over the course of his forty-five-year career, Waterston has appeared in more than eighty film and television productions and has received multiple nominations for Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and Emmy Awards. Allmovie has described him as having "cultivated a loyal following with his quietly charismatic, unfailingly solid performances."
