Walter Sande

Walter Sande was a Colorado-born actor known for his imposing presence and frequent appearances in character roles. Born in Denver on July 9, 1906, he developed an early interest in music, forming his own band during college. This led to a position as musical director for 20th Century-Fox's theater chain, which eventually transitioned into acting in films beginning in 1937. Often appearing in small, uncredited roles, he first gained notice in serials such as *The Green Hornet Strikes Again!* (1940) and *Sky Raiders* (1941), playing a third-string heavy. His first significant role came in *The Iron Claw* (1941) as Jack "Flash" Strong, a comic sidekick to the hero. He later played Red Pennington, the amusing sidekick to Don Winslow in *Don Winslow of the Navy* (1942) and its sequel *Don Winslow of the Coast Guard* (1943). This role marked the beginning of a steady supporting career in film, appearing alongside major stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in *To Have and Have Not* (1944), Gary Cooper in *Along Came Jones* (1945), Alan Ladd in *The Blue Dahlia* (1946), Charlton Heston in *Dark City* (1950), and Spencer Tracy in *Bad Day at Black Rock* (1955). He also appeared in classic sci-fi films like *Red Planet Mars* (1952), *The War of the Worlds* (1953), and *Invaders from Mars* (1953), and had a recurring role as Detective Matthews in the "Boston Blackie" film series. During the golden age of television, Sande worked extensively in westerns and crime dramas throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He had a regular role as Capt. Horatio Bullwinkle on *The Adventures of Tugboat Annie* (1957) and played Lars "Papa" Holstrum, Inger Stevens' Swedish father, on *The Farmer's Daughter* (1963). Walter Sande died of a heart attack in 1971 at the age of 65.
